The 3Rs and the ethics of animal research (10SMSTS-101)
Description
Animal experimentation is a topic of intense social, scientific, legal, and ethical debate. Issues surrounding animal welfare, animal rights, research freedom, and the quality of scientific studies will remain highly relevant for students across a range of disciplines. This course facilitates discussions on the challenges faced by medicine, natural sciences, and social sciences, encouraging a collaborative approach to addressing these issues.
Through a combination of lectures, discussions, a lab visit and group work, the course offers participants the opportunity to analyze complex problems from multiple perspectives, critically examine their own beliefs, and engage in interdisciplinary exchanges. It is designed to help students develop well-informed and nuanced opinions on the socially and scientifically significant topic of "Science and Animal Use," regardless of whether they are directly involved in animal experimentation themselves.
