Fake Science - Isolated Cases or a Systemic Problem? (10SMSTSp101)

Description

Doctored images, invented data, published studies that never took place — are these unfortunate but inevitable isolated cases? Or do they unveil a systematic problem in how research operates?

In this lecture we investigate the problem of scientific misconduct from multiple angles — ranging from specific cases, investigative techniques and the role of whistleblowing, to epistemological considerations, systemic causes and possible solutions.

The main event consists of biweekly lectures by national and international experts. At the same time, participants will collaboratively write a short book on the problem of fake science, which will be published online. The book chapters will follow the content of the lecture series. We will meet in person in sessions that directly precede the lectures. In these sessions, we will discuss the content of the previous lecture and students will receive guidance on how to write their contribution to the book.
